Treat Receding Gums Without Scalpels or Sutures
Gum recession is one of the most common consequences of periodontal disease, aggressive brushing, genetics, and natural aging, and it is also one of the most undertreated. Patients from Converse and Universal City come to Fountain of Youth Dental for the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique in San Antonio TX because Dr. Cappetta, DDS, a member of the Academy of General Dentistry with over 35 years of general dentistry experience, offers a minimally invasive alternative to traditional gum grafting that produces immediate visible results with a fraction of the recovery time.
When gum tissue recedes it exposes the root surface of the tooth, which is softer than enamel and significantly more vulnerable to decay, sensitivity, and bacterial damage. Left untreated, recession accelerates. The root surfaces develop decay, the supporting bone follows the tissue, and what began as a cosmetic concern becomes a structural one. The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique addresses recession at the stage where it can still be corrected conservatively, without cutting tissue from the roof of the mouth and without suturing it back into place.
How the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique Works
The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique was invented and patented by Dr. John Chao, DDS, and has been performed successfully for over two decades. The procedure works by accessing and repositioning existing gum tissue rather than harvesting donor tissue from elsewhere in the mouth. It is scalpel-free and suture-free, which accounts for both the reduced post-operative discomfort and the dramatically shorter recovery compared to traditional gum grafting.
Dr. Cappetta begins by applying local anesthesia to ensure the patient is completely comfortable throughout the procedure. A small access point approximately the diameter of a needle is created in the gum tissue above the area of recession. Using specially designed instruments developed by Dr. Chao, Dr. Cappetta gently loosens the gum tissue and guides it back down to cover the exposed root surface. Collagen strips are then placed through the pinhole to stabilize the repositioned tissue and promote healing. Most patients return to normal activity within 24 to 48 hours.
Who Is a Good Candidate for the Chao Pinhole® Technique
Not every patient with gum recession is an appropriate candidate for the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique. The procedure is most effective for patients with mild to moderate gum recession who have adequate existing gum tissue to reposition. The amount of tissue available, the location and extent of the recession, and the stability of the underlying bone all factor into whether the Pinhole technique is the right approach or whether traditional grafting is more clinically appropriate.
Patients who benefit most from the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique include those with recession across multiple teeth who want to address several sites in a single appointment, patients who have avoided treating recession because of concerns about the traditional graft procedure, and patients in good overall periodontal health whose recession is the result of brushing technique, genetics, or aging rather than active untreated gum disease. Patients with active periodontitis typically need the disease stabilized before any recession treatment is performed.
