A Five-Minute Exam That Can Save Your Life
Oral cancer diagnosed early carries a survival rate above 80 percent. Diagnosed after it has spread, that number drops below 40 percent. That gap is determined almost entirely by when the cancer was found. Patients from Canyon Lake and New Braunfels trust Fountain of Youth Dental for their routine care because Dr. Cappetta, DDS, a member of the Academy of General Dentistry with over 35 years of general dentistry experience, includes an oral cancer screening at every adult checkup as a standard part of the appointment.
More than 54,000 Americans receive an oral cancer diagnosis each year and roughly one person dies from it every hour. The disease carries a high death rate not because it is difficult to treat when caught early but because it is so frequently caught late. Most early-stage cases cause no pain and no visible change a patient would notice on their own, which is exactly why a systematic exam at every routine visit is the standard of care at Fountain of Youth Dental.
Who Is at Risk for Oral Cancer
Tobacco use in any form is the most established risk factor, and heavy alcohol consumption is an independent risk factor that compounds significantly when combined with tobacco. Prolonged sun exposure raises risk for lip cancers and a personal or family history of oral cancer elevates risk considerably. Patients in any of these categories benefit most from consistent annual screening.
The factor that has most changed the oral cancer risk picture in the past two decades is HPV, specifically HPV-16. Human papillomavirus now accounts for a substantial and growing portion of oropharyngeal cancers, particularly in younger adults with no history of tobacco or alcohol use. Patients who assume they have no risk because they do not smoke or drink are often surprised to learn that HPV-related oral cancers are rising rapidly across demographics that would not traditionally be considered high-risk.
What Dr. Cappetta Checks at Every Screening
The oral cancer screening at Fountain of Youth Dental follows a consistent pattern at every adult visit. Dr. Cappetta examines the lips, interior cheeks, hard and soft palate, floor of the mouth, all surfaces of the tongue including the sides and underside where lesions are most frequently missed, the gum tissue, and the back of the throat.
He then palpates the lymph nodes in the neck and under the jaw for swelling or asymmetry that could indicate regional involvement. He is looking for red patches, white patches, ulcers that have not healed within two weeks, lumps, and any change in tissue texture or color. Most screenings find nothing concerning. When something warrants further evaluation, Dr. Cappetta explains the finding clearly before recommending the appropriate next step.
What to Expect at Your Oral Cancer Screening
The screening takes less than five minutes, requires no preparation, and happens as part of the routine exam at your standard cleaning appointment. No separate visit is needed and no additional request is required. Dr. Cappetta performs the screening on every adult patient at every checkup without exception.
Patients with dentures or removable appliances are asked to remove them so the underlying tissue can be fully evaluated. The examination is completely painless. After the screening Dr. Cappetta briefly reviews what he observed. If everything looks normal he confirms that and moves on. If anything needs a closer look, he explains what he found and the appropriate next step before the patient leaves the chair.
