How Long Does Invisalign Treatment Take?

Enhance your oral health with our top notch laser dentistry, a key step towards a brighter, healthier smile.

Invisalign is a game-changer in the world of orthodontics. It’s discreet, removable, and comfortable. And while it’s famous for giving people straight smiles without metal brackets, one of the most common questions we hear at Fountain of Youth Dental is: “How long does Invisalign treatment actually take?”

The answer? It depends. The average treatment time falls between 12 and 18 months, but some patients see results in as little as 6 months—others may need closer to 24.

This article breaks down all the factors that affect your Invisalign timeline so you know what to expect before you start.

Average Invisalign Treatment Duration

Let’s start with some basics. While no two smiles are the same, the majority of Invisalign users complete their treatment in about a year to 18 months.

Of course, that’s just an average. Some people have mild crowding or spacing issues that respond quickly. Others may need bite correction or significant movement, which takes more time.

The best way to get a timeline tailored to your case? Schedule a consultation. We’ll take digital scans and map out your entire Invisalign journey in detail.

Factor 1: Complexity of Your Case

This is probably the biggest influencer of how long your treatment will take.

Mild cosmetic cases (think small gaps or slightly crooked teeth) may be resolved in under a year. But more complex cases—like severe crowding, overbites, underbites, or teeth that need rotation—will require more time and more sets of aligners.

Here’s a rough idea:

  • Mild cases: 6–12 months
  • Moderate cases: 12–18 months
  • Complex cases: 18–24+ months

During your consultation at our San Antonio office, we’ll let you know exactly where you fall on that spectrum.

Factor 2: Patient Compliance

Here’s a big one—and it’s completely in your control.

Invisalign aligners need to be worn 20 to 22 hours a day to stay on track. Taking them out too often or leaving them out too long can delay results.

Common slip-ups that affect treatment time:

  • Forgetting to wear trays consistently
  • Leaving them out during meals and forgetting to put them back in
  • Not switching to the next set on time

We get it—life happens. But sticking to the plan gives you the best shot at finishing treatment on time (or even early!).

Factor 3: Number of Aligners Needed

Your Invisalign plan may include as few as 10 aligners—or more than 50. Each aligner shifts your teeth just a little, so the more movement needed, the more trays you’ll use.

The number of aligners also affects how often you come in for progress checks and whether you’ll need refinements (we’ll get to that in a minute).

It’s one of the reasons we start every treatment with 3D digital scans—so we can map the path from where your teeth are now to where you want them to be.

Factor 4: Refinements or Mid-Treatment Adjustments

Sometimes, teeth don’t move exactly as planned. Or maybe there’s one stubborn tooth that needs a bit more nudging.

That’s where refinements come in. These are additional sets of aligners added to your plan after the initial treatment is complete—or midway through if adjustments are needed.

Refinements are totally normal. In fact, they’re expected in many cases. They may add a few weeks or months to your total time, but they’re worth it to get the best results possible.

Factor 5: Age and Tooth Responsiveness

Age plays a small role in treatment speed, too. Younger patients, especially teens, often see faster movement because their teeth and bones are still developing.

That said, adults can absolutely achieve great results. It might take slightly longer, but the difference is usually minimal. We treat patients in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s—and beyond!

Staying on Track During Invisalign Treatment

Want to keep your treatment time short and sweet? Here’s what we recommend:

  • Wear aligners 20–22 hours a day, every day
  • Keep aligners clean to avoid stains and odors
  • Switch trays as directed (usually every 1–2 weeks)
  • Attend all check-ins and let us know if something doesn’t feel right

We’ll give you a full set of guidelines, and we’re always here if you need a little accountability or support.

Life After Invisalign: How to Maintain Your Results

Once treatment is done, we celebrate—then talk about retainers.

After all that work, you don’t want your teeth to shift back. That’s why we provide custom retainers and give you detailed instructions on how often to wear them.

Retainers are especially important during the first year after treatment. We typically recommend:

  • Full-time wear for the first few months
  • Nighttime wear long-term
  • Regular check-ins to ensure your retainer still fits properly

Think of the retainer as your insurance policy for all that time and effort.

It may cause discomfort or set your treatment back. Let us know—we’ll help you get back on track safely.

Is Invisalign faster than braces?

In many cases, yes. Invisalign can be quicker for mild to moderate cases, especially with consistent wear.
