The Invisalign Process: What to Expect

Enhance your oral health with our top notch laser dentistry, a key step towards a brighter, healthier smile.

Step-by-Step Guide to the Invisalign Process: What to Expect

Invisalign is one of the most exciting advances in dentistry—and it’s changing the way people think about straightening their teeth. Over 14 million patients worldwide have already transformed their smiles with this clear aligner system.

But if you’re just getting started, you probably have questions. What’s the process like? Is it painful? How long does it take?

At Fountain of Youth Dental, we walk with you through every step. Here’s a full breakdown of the Invisalign process—from your first consultation to that final, confident smile.

Step 1: The Initial Invisalign Consultation

Every Invisalign journey starts with a conversation. We’ll sit down with you to learn about your goals, review your dental history, and take a look at your current smile.

This visit includes:

  • A full dental exam
  • Digital X-rays or 3D imaging (if needed)
  • A conversation about your lifestyle and goals

We’ll also let you know if you’re a good candidate for Invisalign. The great news? Invisalign works for most common issues like crowding, gaps, and mild bite problems. If you qualify, we move on to the next step.

Step 2: Digital Impressions and Smile Preview

Gone are the days of messy, uncomfortable molds. Instead, we use advanced digital scanners to create a precise 3D image of your teeth.

This digital model lets us:

  • Map out your tooth movements
  • Create a step-by-step treatment plan
  • Show you a preview of your future smile!

It’s one of our favorite moments—patients love seeing what their teeth will look like at the end of treatment.

Once you approve the plan, we send your scans to Invisalign, where your custom aligners are made.

Step 3: Getting Your First Set of Aligners

About 2–3 weeks later, your first trays will be ready. We’ll check the fit, make any small adjustments, and go over how to wear and care for them.

Here’s what we’ll cover during this appointment:

  • How to insert and remove your aligners
  • Cleaning tips (no, you don’t need fancy products)
  • What to expect in the first few days

You’ll wear each set of aligners for 1–2 weeks, depending on your treatment plan. Most people wear them 22 hours a day—removing them only to eat, brush, and floss.

Step 4: Progress Checks and Tray Changes

As you move through your series of aligners, you’ll come in for quick progress checks about every 6–8 weeks.

During these visits, we’ll:

  • Monitor how your teeth are moving
  • Make sure everything’s on track
  • Provide your next sets of trays

If needed, we can make small tweaks to your treatment plan. These appointments are usually short, and they help keep things smooth from start to finish.

Some cases also involve Invisalign attachments—small tooth-colored buttons that help guide certain movements. If you need them, we’ll explain everything clearly and walk you through what to expect.

Step 5: Your Final Aligner and Smile Reveal

That last set of trays always feels exciting—and a little surreal. You’ve done the work, followed the steps, and now you get to see the results.

Once your teeth are in their final position, we’ll scan your smile again and create a custom retainer to keep everything in place.

Retainers are essential. Teeth naturally want to shift back over time, and a retainer prevents that from happening.

You’ll wear your retainer full time at first, then gradually move to nights only. And we’ll check in at regular intervals to make sure your smile stays right where it should be.

How Long Does the Invisalign Process Take?

The average Invisalign treatment takes 12–18 months. But some patients see results in as little as 6 months, depending on their case.

The more closely you follow the plan—especially wearing your aligners consistently—the faster and better your results will be.

We’ll give you a personalized timeline and keep you informed every step of the way.

Does Invisalign Hurt?

Most patients experience mild pressure or discomfort for the first day or two with each new set of aligners. That’s totally normal—it means they’re working!

It usually goes away quickly, and it’s nothing like the soreness from traditional braces. Over-the-counter pain relievers and a soft diet help during the adjustment phase.

If you ever have discomfort beyond the usual, we’re just a phone call away.

Invisalign Process Questions Answered

What happens if I lose one of my aligners?

Give us a call right away. We may have you move on to the next tray or reorder the one you lost.

Can I whiten my teeth while using Invisalign?

Yes, but it’s best to wait until you’ve completed treatment. Whitening works better once the aligners are off.

Will I need attachments or buttons on my teeth?

Possibly. Attachments help with certain movements. They’re small, tooth-colored, and usually not very noticeable.
